Jizō Statues at Hase-dera Temple in Kamakura, Japan.

Jizō is seen as the guardian of children – in particular, children who died before their parents – and is believed to help their souls reach paradise. Parents place the statues that remain in place for about a year; it is estimated that some 50,000 Jizo statues have been placed at Hase-dera since WWII.
