Happy New Year! Welcome to 2025 - the “Year of the Snake” here in Japan, according to the 12-year cycle of zodiacal animals.

Itabashi, which is my home ward here in Tokyo, sent a digital New Year’s Greeting this morning with Itabashi’s mascot Rinrin-chan (りんりんちゃん) and some snake buddies. The main phrase reads “kinga shinnen” (a formal way of saying “Happy New Year” in Japanese).
Towards the end of the old year, a lot of snake-themed decorations could be seen everywhere in the city. Here is one example of an accordingly themed decoration that I recently saw in Ochanomizu.
At the turn of years, many businesses have some sort of display of upcoming zodiac animal. Here is an example of a nice snake that I found a few days ago in the Ochanomizu area of Tokyo.
